A hundred years ago, as 1,000’s of troops returned from the First World War the world saw an unprecedented economic boom. All of those troops had money in their pockets, and they were willing to spend it. A euphoria swept across the world that lasted almost ten years.
Today, the world is waking from a collective hibernation caused by government responses to COVID 19. In some places like Sweden, there wasn’t a shutdown; in others like Florida and Texas, the masks are off, and their economies are gearing up. In places like Canada, governments continue to keep the economies shut down.
That all said, the world is coming alive, and it will be the roaring 20’s again for business. The challenge is that how we did business before is gone. We need to do business in a different way. For a long time, I have told my clients and students that” Doing new things is easy – it is letting go of the old that is difficult.”
Three Things Businesses Need to Do:
Be ready for both online and in-person sales: Just because we are allowed to open doesn’t mean the customers are coming back. It is certain that some will, and they will be looking for the same high-quality service they got before COVID. Others will continue buying online – and you need to be ready for those customers too.
Watch new technologies: the “new normal,” just like the Roaring Twenties, will be a technological reset. Soldiers in 1914 left a world where horses and the telegraph dominated and returned to one where automobiles and telephones were common. Not all new technologies will be successful or even useful, but the ones that are will be the basis for new wealth and success
Let go of what is not working: This is the hard part. Products that were our cash cows are now our dogs; services we hadn’t heard of are now the basis for entirely new industries. Telling them apart will be the hard part. You will have to be an information sponge and accept that old ideas will need to be discarded. If you every sentence with” No, I know that won’t work, “…you are in trouble.
The 2020s didn’t get off to a great start. How they finish is up to you.
